I rarely DJ my own music as I prefer to play live. But there was this one instance where due to logistics (heavy dust, increment weather so not wanting to take all my gear out there) I decided to put together a DJ set. This also is a mix of three of my musical projects that are each quite different from each other. I was surprised how they actually all fit. You will hear 'Bolga Brothers' my world music project I produced with Rashed Anaba from Ghana. Also, the original 'Ambient Love Lounge'. The collaboarative featuring myself, Fonetick Lee and Insomnian. We were a regular live performance chill room act in the northern California rave scene from 1996-2001. Even my darker persona 'Keoni' shows up towards the end of the mix. This is just the first 12 and a half minutes. It is an intentionally open piece of work to highlight the subtle nuances of polyrythmic music.

Polyrhythmic architecture and songs that unknowingly transition through multiple key signatures lay the foundation for this body of work brought together by three seasoned musicians, Tony Kalhagen, Amanda Lawrence and Fonetick Lee. Tony met Amanda while working in the neo-classical project "This Twilight Orchestra" in Portland, Oregon.Tony was ready to step off into a new musical adventure and invited Amanda to join him on that journey. Tony began writing new material, this time not on guitar but instead on Piano. He wanted to to approach this new endeavor from a very 'music theory' stance since both him and Amanda are classically trained musicians. Tony would say, "I Love working with Amanda as we both speak the same language, a language very few people I know speak". After a few months they had these first five songs ready to perform and record. Enter Fonetick Lee. Fonetick Lee and Tony have been performing and collaborating on music since the mid-nineties. Most notably they created one of the first all live electronic acts in the underground Rave scene in Northern California, "The Ambient Love Lounge" Twenty years later they both found themselves living in Portland, Oregon. Fonetick Lee was drawn to the new project and began composing electronic music to the new tracks. The culmination of these efforts is "Noir", the new album from Tony Kalhagen The album begins with the full "Circus" as Tony calls it, music from the Big Top. It borders on a chaotic yet very listenable and actually very cohesive piece of musical literature that stands outside of any current genre. The second half of the album is "Naked". It is just Tony and Amanda. Scratch tracks of the same five songs left raw, you may even hear a click track bleeding in through the headphones. Tony chose to release these versions as they really show the individual sensibilities of each track. These original tracks were all recorded in Tony's living room in downtown Portland. Welcome to the Big Top.

The album was never released as Tony considered it to be too dark. Other songs were written over 10 years later while Tony traveled throughout the world with his Ukulele and his wife Terri-Lynn. Some in Paris, Malaysia, Ghana and India. The album as it is now was finally recorded in 2012 in a small condo in downtown Portland, Oregon. It again was scraped for concerns that it may be too dark and Tony really did not know where to release it. Tony started listening to the album again in 2018 and realized it was too good not to be heard. So, 7 years later in 2019 "The Streets of Paris" is finally being given to the world to hear.

The majority of people living in Africa do not have access to clean water or electricity. So when you bring someone from West Africa, from their mud hut village to the United States of America for three months, there is nothing that you can plan for and everything will be unexpected. We first traveled through the region hitch hiking from Accra Ghana to Timbuktu Mali through Burkina Faso in 2006. We planned our journey through the most remote regions possible. This took us through Bolgatanga in the North East region of Ghana. This is where we met Rashed Anaba, a young man on a bike hustling the few travelers coming through every year to sleep on a mud hut. We said yes and met the community of Gungabisi. Upon returning to America we realized the lack of clean water in the community and raised the funds to build a clean water well. In 2008 we returned and built the well with a contractor. In 2010 the contractor paid for a plane ticket for Rashed to visit us with the hopes of raising more money for more well projects. Unknown to us, he would be living with us in our 1 bedroom / bath house in rural America in the winter for three months. Showing Rashed how to use a light switch or how to use the shower was the first indication this would be an education for us all. It rained everyday and in between presentations to groups like the Rotary we just hung out in our small house in the rain. Rashed would walk around every day and sing. One day my wife, Terri Lynn said to me, you have an African singing in your house, record this. So I did. I put head phones on him and a click track. He laid down these vocal tracks and I composed music to go with them. I have recorded hundreds of tracks in my career for countless genres, but this one will never be duplicated. We also included the sound track from the documentary "Just A Drop". We made the film Just a Drop to document how our overland adventure across West Africa turned into a humanitarian aid project building clean water wells in Ghana. We wanted the soundtrack to be as unique and special as the story itself. So, Tony Kalhagen extracted audio clips from the hours of video they used to produce the film. Chanting, drumming and sounds from daily African life were sent to Fonetick Lee (James Davidson) and then used as samples to create the musical sound track from the film. It is some of the most unusual music ever produced.

Emerging from the darkness of 'Artists Proof' and a 5150 the artist Tony Kalhagen dug deep and resurfaced with an album intending to heal, not just himself but others. This set off a firestorm during the mid nineties when Oprah was everywhere and Kalhagen was often found working with New Age icons such as Gary Zukov, Marianne Willamson, Dan Millman, R. Carlos Nakai and many others. Healing practioners around the world used this album in their work and many of Tony's events were focused on sound healing. Massage parties and chill rooms at raves were a common occurance to see this multi instrumentalist perform this body of work.
